On the Streets for Alison is the first book I finished and published. While it took me a couple of years to get it to a point I thought would be acceptable as a published work, there is a story behind the book I thought I would share. Probably sometime in 2005 I remember sitting at a table with a friend eating lunch during a work day. While we were there a television was on and I saw a news article about a big sex trafficking ring that was busted in the Atlanta area. Then they said something about how Atlanta was turning into one of the largest sex trafficking areas. I had always heard of it but didn’t realize it could be happening so close to home. Of course that is what all of us say when we chose to be blind to problems we cannot do anything about.
So when I got home that evening I started to think about this problem. For some reason this really bothered me. Was it because I had two young daughters living with me and the thought of them getting into something like this would make me want to turn into Liam Neeson in the Taken series? But I am an overweight IT guy. What can I do?
I started to think is there anything I can do. I did some research and realized this is a world that if you get involved you actually can put your family in harm’s way. So I turned off the thought of getting involved. But it always stayed with me. So when I started to think of a story to write this was the first thing I thought of. I was not comfortable talking about real young kids getting pulled into this so I researched to see if there were any stories of young adults getting pulled in and of course there are plenty. Once I realized it was something that was happening I made up the rest.
There is a little truth in my fiction, like I am sure there is in a lot out there. In chapter seven there is a scene where the guys are dealing with a tire that is losing air on a trailer. Well most of that actually happened in some form or another. There was a tire that was almost flat and the scene of the guys acting like they were blowing it up is true. And even the part of some lady smashing into a dumpster and then driving off happened. It was one of the many crazy things some friends and I got into. There are more and I hope to integrate them into my stories in one way or another.
Let me know what you think.
